Compassionate Leave

A permanent employee is entitled to 2 days paid compassionate leave for any occasion when a member of the employee’s immediate family, or employee’s household:

  • Becomes deceased; or

  • Contracts or develops a life-threatening illness or injury.

Reasonable evidence should be provided.

Casual employees are entitled to the above, however leave will be unpaid.

Compassionate leave is NOT deducted from Personal/Carer’s Leave entitlements.

Compassionate leave is a separate entitlement to Personal and Carer’s Leave and Annual Leave. It also doesn’t accrue and accumulate like other types of leave. Instead it can be taken at any time it’s needed.

An employee can take up to 2 days per occasion. They can choose to take the leave as a continuous 2 day period or 2 separate 1 day periods. By agreement with the employer, an employee may take the leave in multiple shorter periods.
